Montenegrins assault on the Albanians of Zagradje (near Spizza) in 1858

“Back at the foot of the rocky heights lies the village of Zagradje—commonly known as Spizza—though the name actually belongs to the Nehaj fortress, which is built on a high, imposing conical peak in the immediate vicinity; the fortress itself dates only from recent times. On March 12, 1858, the villages of Džurmanj (Gjurmani) and Miščići (Mishqiqi) joined the cause and summoned the Montenegrin Senator Plamenac.

He arrived immediately with 500 men and occupied Nehaj (or Spizza), which was unfortified at the time. Naturally, the Turks did not remain idle; 3,000 men marched up from Antivari. Danilo, wishing to avoid provoking a war, ordered the evacuation of the occupied villages; the villagers, along with their priest Andrija, retreated to Montenegro with Plamenac.”

Montenegrins plunder the Catholic Albanians of Sagragie (Zagradje) in 1861

“However, during the night of the 28th to the 29th, when the Montenegrins realized that the number of armed Turks was increasing noticeably and began to fear encirclement, they withdrew from Sagragie—though not before stripping the local Catholic residents’ homes of everything that wasn’t nailed down. Had it not been for this retreat and the timely arrival of reinforcements from Antivari, Fort Nehaj—along with its entire garrison, including Abdi Pasha—would have fallen into Montenegrin hands.”
