In 1876, the “Augsburger Abendzeitung” reported that Hungarian authorities had arrested several Serbs in Pakracc and Bjelovar, as a result of treasonous agitation.

“The recent arrests in Pakrac and Bjelovar are causing a great stir in Hungary. A telegram from Kostajnica to the Budapester Korrespondenz reports that, due to treasonous agitation, two professors from the Serbian teacher-training college—named Jossic and Despotovic—as well as two merchants, Kork and Markovic, were arrested several days ago. In Bjelovar, two teachers and several merchants—all of the non-Uniate Greek faith—were likewise arrested.

The Gespan (county prefect) of Pakrac has been dismissed and has reportedly even been placed under police surveillance; further arrests are imminent. Those arrested had maintained continuous contact with the Serbs of Hungary. The charge is high treason, allegedly committed through toasts to King Milan and by inciting the rural population to participate in the struggle for freedom.”
