The histoy of Albanian highlander and female warrior Mrika of Kol Marashi – and The Terror of the Barbarians in 1907

Mrika, a brave and dignified Albanian highland woman, possessed a beauty that, by the grace of God, was immortalized in photography. The evidence of her appearance is before your eyes. Yet behind this photograph of a woman from the Albanian highlands lies a macabre story. It is an account of an experience so extraordinary that it seems almost impossible to encounter even in a film.

It tells of a woman who, in the name of love, defended her code of honor and sought vengeance for her murdered husband. Having no brothers to carry out the blood vengeance, she decided to undertake it herself.

She carried out this act of devotion to her husband unto death—something that remains difficult to imagine even today. Adapted from the book “An Observer in the Near East,” 1907.

The Story of Mrika of Kol Marashi

This is Mrika of Kol Marashi, who carried out an act of blood vengeance.

She had married Leci, a man from Pulti, approximately two years earlier. Only one month after their marriage, her husband was treacherously murdered. They had been living near the banks of the Drin River.

Overwhelmed by grief and sorrow at her terrible loss, Mrika disappeared for an entire year. She remained hidden and out of sight, waiting for the opportunity to confront the man responsible for her husband’s death.

One afternoon, on the main road in Shkodër, she saw the man who had killed her husband walking along the road. She drew the revolver—the pistol belonging to her deceased husband—from her belt and shot him, killing him on the spot.

But her act of vengeance did not end there. Mrika took blood vengeance by killing the man who had murdered her husband. The shocking truth was that the man who had killed her husband was none other than her own brother-in-law—her husband’s brother.

Yet even this was not the end. Determined to complete the blood vengeance, she immediately traveled to the home of his parents, a journey of approximately three days from Shkodër. There, she shot and killed both her father-in-law and mother-in-law.

Her own family then took her daughter under their protection, regarding her with pride for having avenged the death of Leci, her husband . Mrika, an Albanian highland woman, circa 1906, carried out a blood vengeance, killing the man who had shot her husband dead.

That man was her own brother-in-law. She then continued the vengeance, also killing her father-in-law and mother-in-law.
