Former Greek minister Theodoros Pangalos has reignited the debate regarding the Souliotes through posts on his Twitter profile, referencing the heroic act performed by Souliote women 215 years ago.

Here is what he wrote:

“There is no Greek who does not understand the word *louloudi* (flower).

It has completely replaced the old Greek version of the word, *anthos* (άνθος). But how many people know that the word *louloudi* (flower) comes from the Albanian language?

On this day, 215 years ago, in the mountains north of Preveza, Souliote women threw their infants off the cliffs and then threw themselves off as well.

For them, death was preferable to humiliation.

How could Souliote women say *louloudi* (flower) when they were entirely Albanian?”

Pangalos added in another post:

“Let the grey and pink fascists-communists understand that a Greek is anyone who feels that way, not just someone born in this country.”
