M. S. (40) from Kumane in Serbia is suspected of abusing and killing his mother Slavica S. in the family home and then dismembering her body. He is also under investigation for illegal possession of cannabis and cocaine.
The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Zrenjanin issued an order on 4 October to conduct an investigation against M. S. There is reasonable suspicion that he committed aggravated murder and illegally possessed drugs. The prosecution suspects that M. S., on an unspecified day between 2 September and 1 October of this year, in the family home in Kumane, killed his mother Slavica S., whom he had previously abused. He is also charged with keeping cannabis and cocaine in the house on 1 October.
The woman’s body was found in the house after her daughter reported her missing. The duty prosecutor carried out an on-site inspection, and according to information from the investigation, body parts were found in the freezer. At the prosecutor’s proposal, the Higher Court in Zrenjanin ordered the suspect to be held in investigative detention due to the risk of influencing witnesses, repeating the criminal offence, and public disturbance.
Neighbours: The son has always been problematic
News of the crime has shaken the residents of Kumane. Neighbours speak only highly of the murdered woman, while they say her son had caused problems before.
“About Slavica and her late husband, everyone in the village can say only the best things; they had a harmonious marriage. However, the son has always been strange. He constantly argued with his father, and later it turned out he also had serious problems with drugs,” the neighbours said.
Known for violence and psychological problems
A source close to the investigation confirmed that M. S. had previously been prone to violence. “Two reports of domestic violence were filed against the suspect. The first time he received a suspended sentence because it was established that he was not of sound mind. When the violence was repeated, treatment in a prison hospital was ordered because he was assessed as a psychiatric patient who repeats acts while in a state of diminished responsibility,” the source explains.
M. S. was undergoing treatment but was later released. “After a medical assessment and with the court’s approval, he was released so that he could continue treatment at liberty. In the meantime his father died, so the mother took over all care of him. She hid from those around her the problems she was dealing with,” the source adds.
Crime discovered after missing-person report
The murdered Slavica S. was a retired doctor and had come to the family house in Kumane to visit her son. Her daughter, the suspect’s sister, reported to the police that her mother had not been answering for days. After the report, the police went to the address and discovered the crime.
M. S. is currently in the psychiatric ward. The investigation continues in order to establish all the circumstances of the death and the period that preceded it.
