“Regarding the previously reported fighting involving the Montenegrins, the “Neue Freie Presse” has received the following information from a competent source: All reports from Cetinje regarding alleged victories and conquests in Herzegovina are false. Apart from the skirmish Selim Pasha fought in the Zallom defile, no clash has taken place.

The Montenegrins are operating only in the mountains and have occupied only those villages abandoned by their inhabitants. They have nowhere approached the positions held by Turkish troops; consequently, reports of the alleged capture of Gacko, Bileća, Stolac, and Nevesinje are entirely unfounded.

On the 13th, a company was ambushed by a superior force of Peko’s bands while fetching water near Klek. The brave unit, having suffered heavy losses, held its ground until the arrival of the battalion, which put the insurgents to flight.

A telegram from a Montenegrin source (Ragusa, July 17) reports the arrival of Montenegrins at Blagaj—a mountain pass south of Mostar—through which Nikita’s bands can now descend into the Neretva Valley. The same dispatch announces the imminent fall of Mostar, the principal city of Herzegovina.

It is unknown whether Mostar, which has a population of over 10,000, has recently been fortified. Mukhtar Pasha may well have added earthworks to the towers defending the stone Neretva bridge, in correct anticipation of the events to come. The fall of Mostar would force the Turks to evacuate the entire left bank of the Neretva, with the exception of the fortified strongholds.”
